Elon Musk, once a prominent figure during the early days of Donald Trump’s presidency, is reportedly stepping back from his involvement with the controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), according to recent statements from the White House.
Sources confirm that Musk, who closely aligned himself with Trump during the first 100 days of his administration, is gradually being removed from his unofficial advisory role. The tech mogul’s position with DOGE—a task force established to slash federal spending—has become more distant, both literally and figuratively.
Throughout his time working with Trump, Musk frequently attended high-level meetings, flew aboard Air Force One, and even brought his child to sensitive fiscal discussions. However, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles now says Musk is no longer a regular visitor to the West Wing.
“We’re still in communication—mostly by phone—but he’s not physically showing up like before,” Wiles told The New York Post. “His presence is less visible, but that doesn’t mean he’s completely out.”
Instead, Musk’s team has been relocated to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, where they are continuing work on implementing aggressive budget cuts. According to Wiles, the transition hasn’t disrupted operations. “His team is handling the workload and remains committed. Elon’s just taking a step back, not walking away,” she added.
The timing of this shift coincides with mounting criticism from Democratic lawmakers who accuse Trump and DOGE of obstructing over $430 billion in government funding. This includes funds allocated for disaster relief, public health research, and other critical services.
To mark the first 100 days of Trump’s return to office, Democrats unveiled a digital tracker highlighting federal programs reportedly being stalled or frozen under the administration’s direction, with Musk’s department at the center of the controversy.
Senator Patty Murray of Washington and Representative Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut condemned the administration’s actions, calling them an “unprecedented and dangerous” dismantling of essential federal programs.
“Rather than supporting American families, President Trump is choosing to sidestep the law and strip away vital resources,” said Murray and DeLauro, who lead the Democratic caucus on congressional funding committees.
They further accused the administration of ignoring spending laws and depriving citizens of investments long promised to them. “No previous president has so openly defied budget laws or so brazenly undermined public funding,” they stated.
While Republicans maintain the objective is to eliminate waste and misuse of taxpayer dollars, critics argue the execution is unlawful and harmful. Several of the contested budget cuts are currently being challenged in court.
Democrats have pledged to continue pressuring the administration and bringing public attention to what they describe as a sweeping, illegal funding freeze. “This isn’t just red tape—it’s real harm being done to Americans in every corner of the country,” they said. “It’s time for Trump and Musk to end this reckless campaign.”
